FedEx Institute Plants Seeds for Patent Income, Commercial Ventures

Biomedical engineering and chemistry are two hot spots for innovation at the University of Memphis, where the FedEx Institute of Technology seeks to usher academic discoveries to the commercial marketplace.

But that doesn’t mean the people who run the institute aren’t looking campuswide for opportunities. Shaye Mandle, the executive director of the institute, and Kevin Boggs, its director of technology transfer and research development, have cast a wide net.

For about two years, they’ve had the task of helping the University of Memphis achieve its full potential as a center for research and development. Although the institute was launched in 2003, the Office of Technology Transfer was not established until 2008.
