State expects ‘green’ growth from new solar cell factories

State officials are hoping the bookend additions of two, billion-dollar solar facilities in Tennessee could mean exponential growth for the state’s green industry.

Germany-based Wacker Chemie AG announced last month that it will build a $1 billion facility near Chattanooga to produce polycrystalline silicon, a key component in solar panels that generate electricity. That comes just three months after Hemlock Semiconductor Corp. announced it will be building a $1.2 billion facility in Clarksville.

“This is really significant because it represents (another major investment) following a string of significant announcements” of solar facilities nationally, says Monique Hanis, spokeswoman for the Solar Energy Industries Association in Washington, D.C.
